letters
so i've been doing alphabet flashcards with avery for awhile now. she does great and recognizes most letters, but there are 7 or 8 that she just can't seem to get down. it's super frustrating and kind of wierd because we work on them all at the same time for the same amount of time.
anyway, this week i put up all of the letters she consistently struggles with around the room and then told her to sit on the couch and close her eyes.
ashton wanted to play too. i know this picture is blurry but i love her little hands.
i counted to three and then called out one of the letters and she had to go find that letter.
good job aves. we'll see if this helps her recognize these letters a little better.
bible
this week we talked a lot about lent and the 40 days that Jesus went without food just because He wanted to obey God and do exactly what God wanted Him to do. i scoured the internet looking for kid friendly ways to introduce the concept of lent and found a great idea on one of those free sunday school websites.
instead of having the girls give something up for 40 days, we are having them wait to eat the jelly beans they are earning throughout the easter season.
i made a chart with things we are working on around here and each color matches a jelly bean. when they do something off of the chart i reward them with a jelly bean in their jar. on easter morning they get to open it.
one cool little aspect that we talked about was God's grace and how we can't do anything to earn God's grace. it's just a free gift. the white jelly beans represent God's grace and as i was explaining this to them i let each of the girls have a white jelly bean. (on easter we will fill the rest of their jar up with white jelly beans)
after we were done with our chart and talking about the ways we could earn jelly beans and how we were going to have to wait to eat our jelly beans until easter, avery asks
"mom, can i have more of God's grace?"
this girl knows how to get what she wants!
art
i drew some jars on white paper, cut out little paper jelly beans and let the girls show me what their jelly bean jars would look like on easter.
this was the first craft we've done that ashton really particpated in and loved. she sat there and worked until all of her jelly beans were in the jar. so fun.
i really would love to hear more lent or easter ideas. from here on out my goal is to take our Bible time on monday mornings and do activities to prepare us for Easter.
i hope for Easter to be a miraculous season around here, full of traditions and memories, just like Christmas.

I'm totally stealing your jelly bean idea!
I'm planning on doing this with the kids for Easter:

But I agree I'd love more books, activities, ideas for Easter/Lent traditions.
Oh my goodness...the jelly beans are such a neat idea! Thanks for sharing!
