broken cisterns can't hold water

dave and i watch hulu twice a week, quite possibly more. and often the commercial that greets us inbetween the soap opera drama of grey's anatomy has images of kids carrying jugs of filthy water miles back to the hut they call home.

there's been a movement these past few years. a water movement. charity water has made it's presence known. through commercials on hulu, through jody landers, and it's gripping our hearts....as it should.

i became a member of this tribe back in december because i knew that these women, this group of people, would fight for justice in all the best ways.

just handing people a cup of clean water is one answer. and it's a good one. but it lacks in depth and complexity much like gas station coffee.

teaching people how to fix broken wells, which gives them a job and allows them to provide clean water for their community? there's starbucks for ya.

while reading becky's email about broken wells, i couldn't help but picture the passage in jeremiah that speaks of broken cisterns.

"My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water." jeremiah 2:13

the israelites kept forgetting the faithfulness of God. they kept putting their hope in stupid things. things that could never hold up in the face of life.

and so my prayer is that as men and women learn how to fix these wells, as they get their hands dirty for their community, that, somehow, as they use their new found skills to provide liquid hope.....the Hope of Jesus would be evident to their hearts and that they would put their hope in Him who is greater than wells and water, in fact, He's the giver of both.

please go HERE. read about this new remarkable adventure and how you can help. break out of your four walls.
